The Difference Between Strength And Muscle Mass Training

There are several types of workouts. If someone trains with weights (this is especially true for guys) he can either focus on becoming stronger or making muscles bigger (they will also get stronger just not that much). So how does one strength train or train for muscle mass gain?

First of all, there isn’t a super clear way “just to get stronger” or “become super huge without getting stronger”. If you do strength training, you will also get bigger, and you will also become stronger if you focus on muscle mass. The difference is mostly in reps.

The concept of strength training is doing lower reps ( up to 5-7 reps) with heavier weights. This will obviously make your muscles stronger as lifting heavier weights “tests” your muscles’ strength, not endurance.

However, focusing on mass gain relies on endurance more, and doesn’t work on strength that much. Here you need to do more reps (10-15) with lighter weights.

Personally, I choose my weights in most exercises so that I stay just under 10-12 reps, no more than that. Try to clarify your goals and decide which one’s for you.
